Job Title: Principal RF Systems Engineer

At Leonardo, we are seeking a highly skilled Principal RF Systems Engineer to join our team. As a key player in the Aerospace, Defence and Security industry, we offer a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects and contribute to the development of innovative solutions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a small team of engineers in the design and development of RF systems, with a focus on Electronic Warfare (EW) projects. The role will involve research and development of low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) concepts, using model-based engineering and proof-of-concept prototype systems to demonstrate viability for further development.

As a valued member of the team, you will be involved in the coordination of bids and proposals to satisfy customer needs, and will lead projects through to a conclusion with recommendations for further work. The team is involved in low TRL research that may not always lead to a product, but always produces Intellectual Property.

This senior role has the potential to develop the candidate towards a Design Authority role, requiring close collaboration with a mixed-discipline team (Hardware, Embedded SW, Application SW, Firmware, etc.). Although a hybrid working role, you will be involved in lab work and trials support, with an element of on-site working.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have expertise in one or more of the following areas: Receivers, Transmitters, PA, EMC. You will also need to have experience of engineering lifecycle, design and development of RF products/systems, and functional analysis and specification development for RF-products/systems with software/firmware content.

We are looking for a candidate who can communicate complex ideas to a mixed-experience audience, and who has the ability to mentor junior engineers. Previous experience working with telecommunication (2G/3G/4G) Air-Interface specification, and knowledge of military and international specifications and standards for EMC, Environmental and safety, applicable to body-worn and vehicle installation, would be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become a Subject Matter Expert in RF systems and support technical proposals in a concise and knowledgeable manner from concept to delivery.
  • Paper research into various Radio systems technologies to understand on-air behaviours and identify areas of interest.
  • Propose, implement and assess Model-based simulations to better understand these behaviours, possibly with some HWIL type experimentation.
  • Closely work with the team in Integration of Software Defined Radio (SDR) based demonstration systems for lab and field-based experimentation.
  • Careful recording of decisions and observations with appropriate stakeholder reporting.
  • Through on-the-job training on Company policies and framework processes, support the System Design Authority to fulfil the role of a Design Authority for product/system, in adherence to the Company Engineering governance.
