Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Physician to serve as the Medical Director at the Deerfield Correctional Center. As a key member of the institution's internal health services multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing professional medical care and medication management to offenders, as well as analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional medical care and medication management to offenders
  • Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses
  • Diagnose or treat acute health care problems, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries
  • Recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized
  • Assist with preparation and modification of treatment plans and recommend to appropriate programs
  • Provide evidence-based health education to the offender population

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or similar specialty
  • Active license to practice medicine in Virginia, and board eligible or certified
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Strong communication skills – orally and in writing/email

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a correctional environment
  • Experience treating in a public health care setting
