This is an exciting opportunity for a Data Policy and Control professional to drive improvement and add value across the Society. The role is central to strengthening our data governance maturity with a focus on 'Lifecycle Management' for our Data and Information.
We're looking for someone with a real drive for delivering improvements and getting the best out of others. Someone that keeps pace with the latest data industry trends and best practice, and who has the ability to lead others to drive through positive improvement in our Data through Policy development and deployment.
At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this role, you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part-time, you'll spend 40% of your working time, at our London or Swindon office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
You'll be responsible for supporting the implementation, operation, and monitoring of Controls supporting Lifecycle Management of Data and Information.
You'll be running meetings, engaging with stakeholders, and liaising across departments to bring these topics to life. Key features of the role are:
- Supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of the Data Framework, Policy, Standards, and Controls; ensuring these are in line with best practice and focused on the desired Data Governance outcomes.
- Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Data and Information Lifecycle Management and support business understanding of all aspects of the Data Framework, Policy, Standards, and Controls in conjunction with subject matter experts from the wider team.
- Work cross-functionally to ensure Data Policies align and dovetail with other linked policies to provide a coherent view as data transitions across the organisation.
- Define intended policy outcomes and providing expert counsel to stakeholders to ensure their understanding of expectations and their accountabilities with regards to adherence across change and BAU activities.
- Work collaboratively across teams, to monitor adherence to the Policy and Standards and to embed best practice with key stakeholders and business functions.
- Contribute to key data governance forums such as the Data Governance Council to ensure they are driving business benefit and progress.
You'll be a data/information professional with experience working cross-functionally at an enterprise level to help business stakeholders understand their accountability and responsibility for the day-to-day governance of data and its management throughout the data lifecycle.
You'll have...
- Subject Matter Expertise; Experience and knowledge of the various elements that make up data and information policy with the ability to use this to advise and guide stakeholders.
- Policy experience - Varied experiences in developing, deploying, and maintaining policies will be critical as a key part of this role is ensuring the Data Governance Policy and associated artefacts drive the organisation in the right direction.
- Policy implementation - experience of supporting Policy implementation and the operation of Controls as defined by Data Framework, Policy, and Standards.
- Risk Management and Regulatory Compliance - experience working in a regulated sector and with experience of Risk Management Frameworks.
- Stakeholder management - a key part of this role will be being able to talk to different stakeholders about data governance and what the Policy means for them to gain their buy-in and provide the clarity they need to enact their responsibilities.
- Experience of people management - this role will involve leadership of those outside of a direct reporting line, influencing, and collaborating with others. There is also scope for this role to include management of people in the future.
- Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It's also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
- Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
- Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive, and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

As a building society, we're owned by our members - that's our customers who have their current account, mortgage, or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose - Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.
When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You'll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You'll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don't have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
