Job Summary

As a key member of our team at The Travelers Indemnity Company, the Director of Risk Management will play a critical role in ensuring the effective management of risk across our organization. This position will be responsible for leading the Risk Control team, providing strategic input to senior management on staff performance and development, and monitoring expenses and budgetary matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Risk Control team, providing technical advice and account information to underwriting business partners for risk assessment and analysis.
  • Manage work assignments for Risk Control staff and leverage specialist involvement when required.
  • Conduct co-surveys and survey/file reviews with local staff as required by our formal QA process.
  • Provide regular feedback and mentoring regarding performance and improvement needs.
  • Manage staff performance, including annual and half-yearly performance reviews, and identify development opportunities and resources.
  • Work with senior management to maintain and ensure proper staffing resources to meet business needs.
  • Maintain timely, frequent, and relevant communications with senior management.
  • Provide regular updates on staff performance.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with underwriting and service teams, the broker/agent community, claims, other Risk Control staff, and clients.
  • Provide education and training necessary to keep our business partners current with available RC products and services.
  • Direct activities focused on meeting RC annual business plan.
  • May conduct risk control surveys at client locations to determine potential hazards and risk factors to be considered in underwriting/risk selection.
  • Serve as a resource to underwriters/business unit management in development of complex deals.
  • Conduct research for underwriters or clients on class of business, operations, or any other technical subject requiring similar analysis.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory environment and emerging safety issues.
  • Understand and apply large account servicing strategies where appropriate, helping clients develop ongoing programs for continuous safety improvement.
  • Operate in accordance with Travelers policies, procedures, and controls (including audit requirements) at all times.
  • Promote Travelers products and philosophy by regular visits to clients' premises, maximizing opportunities for growth and profit of the commercial business.
  • Comply with Travelers Companies Code of Business Conduct and Ethics and HR policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to Travelers Companies Business Excellence Policy and Procedures and deliver high-quality service to our brokers and customers in line with our service standards.
  • Handle complaints in accordance with Company guidelines and personal authority.
  • Comply with FSA, Financial Regulator, and Sarbanes Oxley guidelines.
  • Communicate knowledge of actions to Manager and colleagues and consider their impact on other technical, operational, sales, and financial disciplines when formulating those actions.
  • Adhere to the Company's Environmental Policy and procedures.
  • Continually look for improvement both from a personal and business perspective.
Requirements
  • Experience in safety, risk control, or related fields, including construction, manufacturing, or relevant military experience or a bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Ability to attain appropriate certification to meet legal requirements where applicable.
