Job Description


We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our team as the Head of Environment and Sustainability. This pivotal role requires an individual who can inspire and empower our environment and sustainability team to deliver high-quality services aligned with council priorities, improving the quality of life for residents.


The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, direction, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to drive climate action and nature recovery initiatives. They will lead the development of policies and initiatives that address the council's aspirations for environmental sustainability, overseeing day-to-day operations and managing workloads, budgets, and resources.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for environment and sustainability services.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to build strong relationships and effective communication.
  • Lead the development of policies and initiatives addressing the council's aspirations for environmental sustainability.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, managing workloads, budgets, and resources.
  • Design, develop, and implement plans translating the Council business objectives into working practices for excellent customer service delivery.


Required Skills and Qualifications:



  • Education to degree level or equivalent in a relevant profession.
  • Substantial post-qualification experience in a relevant field/specialism (5 years plus).
  • Experience managing services during periods of organisational change.
  • Significant experience collaborating to enable delivery of Council waste and environmental ambitions.
  • Experience working in a political diverse environment.
  • Ability to inspire and successfully motivate others towards shared objectives.
