About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust as a Specialist Nurse in Sexual Health for Learning Disabilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in improving access to sexual health services for people with learning disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Improving access and bridging any gaps for people with learning disabilities to sexual health advice, information, and clinical services.
  • Providing free, confidential, and supported access to sexual health clinics for people with learning disabilities and their carers.
  • Working in the community to support family carers and support workers, and other involved professionals.
  • Providing reasonable adjustments to support patients, such as longer consultations, easy-read information, and accessible services.
  • Supporting health, social, and VCS networks to identify people with learning disabilities and improve engagement and planning of care.
  • Delivering community outreach sessions on relationships and sex education, asymptomatic STI screening in community learning disability settings, including colleges and day services.
  • Providing consultations to assess sexual health needs, consent, safeguarding, and concerns around capacity; making reasonable service adjustments and referrals as appropriate.
  • Providing LARC and integrated sessions within the main Barnet sexual health clinics.

Requirements
  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) with the NMC Sub-part 1 Adult branch.
  • University certificate or equivalent in Sexual Health training.
  • DFRSH/University Certificate in Contraception/Reproductive Health or equivalent recognized training.
  • Independent Nurse Prescriber or willing to train.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
Desirable
  • LOC SDI or equivalent qualification.
  • LOC IUT or equivalent qualification.
  • Certificate in mentorship course.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work autonomously and be self-directed.
  • Clear vision and in-depth understanding of the quality agenda with working with people with learning disabilities.
  • Teaching and presentation skills.
  • Proficient IT skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate successfully in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent writing skills, able to produce reports about complex subjects/concepts.
  • Evidence of ability to motivate, manage, and lead staff or an organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with people with learning disabilities.
Clinical Skills
  • Able to perform or willing to train in pelvic bimanual examination.
  • Able to perform cervical cytology.
Knowledge and Understanding
  • Knowledge of sexual health needs of all genders.
  • Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Understanding of the legislation relating to young people, including Fraser guidelines, of legislation, policies, and guidance on confidentiality and child protection issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of national and local policies relating to sexual and reproductive health.
  • Understanding of the principles and practices of good sexual health and barriers to people with learning disabilities accessing services.
Experience
  • Substantive experience of working in sexual health.
  • Experience of working to PGDs (if not a prescriber).
  • Experience of delivering evidence-based clinical care.
  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities.
  • Experience of working with client groups from a diverse ethnically mixed background.
  • Experience of working at an advanced practitioner level/Specialist Nurse.
  • Experience of projects/service development.
  • Delivery of workshops.
  • Working effectively with different agencies in the community, voluntary, or statutory sectors.
