Job Summary

The Department for Business and Trade is seeking a highly skilled Policy Adviser to join its Regulated Professions Advisory Functions team. As a key member of the team, you will play a crucial role in managing and maintaining the UK's central digital advisory function for regulated professions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the management and maintenance of the Regulated Professions Register, a world-leading central repository for regulated professions in the UK.
  • Oversee the team's contribution to commercial procurement exercises, manage relationships with DBT's digital teams, and ensure timely and budget-friendly delivery.
  • Support engagement with regulators, devolved governments, and Whitehall departments to commission large datasets and changes to legislation, as needed.
  • Communicate with and influence regulators to ensure they keep their entries on the Register up to date, understand their requirements, and engage effectively.
  • Support the delivery of an enhancement programme for the Register, including managing relationships with external commercial suppliers.
  • Establish strong working relationships within the department, including other policy directorates, analysts, lawyers, and ministerial Private Offices.
  • Support work on legislation, which may involve drafting regulations and managing the parliamentary process to take legislation through parliament, as required.
  • Prepare written briefings and advice for senior officials and ministers, contribute to briefings as needed, and ensure relationships with regulators and chartered bodies are maintained.
  • Contribute to work within the wider team, including engagement with internal and external stakeholders, project planning and evaluation, and providing input into cross-team briefings, research papers, and planning.
Requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex policy concepts to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work at pace, remaining flexible and adaptable to deliver priorities in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of working with a range of stakeholders, particularly commercial colleagues.
  • Keen eye for detail and ability to grapple with complex and technical policy issues, including legal advice that may be unfamiliar.
  • Ability to identify strategic drivers for your work area and links with other work areas in the directorate and department.
  • Strong communicating and influencing skills, particularly across domestic policy areas and with internal commercial/finance stakeholders.
  • Ability and confidence to communicate with stakeholders who may be reluctant to engage or where plans and deliverables are uncertain.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage your own and the wider team's workload effectively.
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge or experience of managing websites or databases, or a willingness to quickly undertake training to develop necessary capability.
  • Knowledge or experience of undertaking public sector commercial procurement, or a willingness to undertake training to develop necessary capability.
  • Knowledge or experience of coordinating government policy, or a willingness to quickly undertake policy profession training to develop necessary capability.
