Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom Springfields Fuels Ltd Full time

The role is in a busy laboratory at Springfields Fuels Ltd, providing analytical support for our Fuel production and Residue Recovery operations.

Samples are required on a fast turnaround time to support process control for 24/7 operations and final fuel certification prior to customer delivery.

The laboratories on the site are fully accredited to ISO 17025. The department is well-equipped with modern and advanced analytical instrumentation, providing the highest quality results to the Nuclear Industry.

As a Scientific Analyst, you will be expected to carry out analysis in techniques such as XRF spectroscopy, pH, Karl Fischer analysis, UV-VIS spectrometry, ISE analysis, and physical testing.

You will also be responsible for maintaining the equipment used within the lab, providing technical input into the analysis methods, and following recent developments in analytical techniques, implementation of new techniques, and efficiency savings across the area.

The laboratory operates within a highly regulated industry, and as such, it is expected that your work is completed to the highest standards following a well-established management system.

Regulation from government and international customers means a busy audit schedule throughout the year, with many of these being through face-to-face interactions. Good communication skills are therefore necessary to maintain these good relationships.

The role involves working nights as part of a two-person shift team. During these times, you will be responsible for the building and all associated activities and infrastructure.

To give you the knowledge to make correct decisions when carrying out this role, Building Controller/DAP (Duly Authorised Person) appointments need to be made; a full and extensive training schedule will be provided for this.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out testing and examination of routine samples using a variety of instrumental or classical chemistry techniques.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with the department's UKAS accredited quality system and within the Operating rules of the department's Safety Case.
  • Develop current and new Analytical Methods, keeping abreast of new theories and analytical instrumentation.
  • Author and review standard operating instructions in accordance with site-specific requirements and ISO-17025.
  • Manage laboratory activities out of hours to meet customer lead-times/expectations.
  • Maintain analytical equipment and ensure fit for use.
  • Maintain safe working through the preparation and application of COSHH and risk assessments.
  • Evaluate and interpret data and identify non-conformances in product and analytical results.
  • Able to write and access technical methods and journals.
  • Participate in customer and regulator inspections/audits.
  • Identification and thorough investigation of non-conformances to identify limited causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with good laboratory practice (GLP).
  • Maintaining good housekeeping of the working areas.

Salary: £40,000 - £60,000 per annum, depending on experience.
