An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Registered Midwife to work with the Maternity team in a job share as joint Band 7 Lead Diabetes Midwife. The successful candidate will provide midwifery leadership and direct Line management of the dedicated Midwifery Diabetes team.

They will work closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to provide the highest standard of care to all women/birthing people with long-standing and gestational diabetes in pregnancy, aiming to achieve the best outcomes for mothers and babies.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in advising and managing diabetes, including starting and adjusting medication when required, and have a sound understanding of different methods of managing Diabetes, such as Diet, Metformin, insulin, intermittent/continuous Glucose Monitoring and Insulin pumps.

They will provide expert knowledge and teaching on all aspects of Diabetes in pregnancy to both the people in their caseload and the staff within Maternity.

The successful applicant will also participate in the Midwifery manager on call night rota, providing professional Midwifery advice/support to colleagues out of hours.

Main duties of the job
  • Ensure the Diabetes service is in line with national best practice recommendations, creating and adapting guidelines as necessary.
  • Provide midwifery support in specialist Diabetes clinic, both independently and as part of the MDT, including Obstetric and Endocrine Consultants.
  • Collate and report audit findings to the National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit (NPID).
  • Ensure that the maternity Diabetes Service is adequately covered at all times for women with diabetes in pregnancy, providing individual support and advice to the women and their families.
  • Confidently manage individual cases of diabetes, advising, managing and prescribing medication (on Midwifery PGD, or as non-medical prescriber) as required.
  • Coordinate plans of care where women are receiving care from multiple specialties/agencies and ensure all plans for women/neonates are clearly documented and communicated with the wider maternity team as appropriate.

Main Duties

  • To act as a midwifery specialist in the field of Diabetes in Pregnancy.
  • Assist and advise other healthcare professionals in the care of women/birthing people undergoing testing and diagnosis.
  • To actively engage and communicate with families, helping them to understand results of investigations and diagnosis and ongoing recommended pathways of care.
