Job Requirements

The Aberystwyth University is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the role of a Teacher in Chinese (in-person) to teach on the university's Lifelong Learning courses.

This is an hourly paid position, and the successful candidate will be required to teach classes between one and four evenings per week during term time. The classes may take place during days, evenings, and weekends, and all courses are subject to minimum student enrolments.

The successful candidate will have experience of teaching Chinese and will understand the needs of adult learners and the need for continuous professional development by teachers. The responsibilities of this role include teaching, course promotion, assessment, and administration, with classes being held in-person.

Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.

  1. To maximise recruitment to LLL courses by publicising and promoting their own module(s) and by participating in general marketing activities and events;
  2. To travel and transport teaching materials to class locations (This is not applicable if the classes are online)
  3. To devise and implement an appropriate student learning experience in line with LLL and University quality assurance guidelines;
  4. To prepare the online learning environment in advance of teaching (subject specific);
  5. To provide appropriate pastoral support for students;
  6. To complete risk assessment documentation (when appropriate);
  7. To contact the relevant coordinators in relation to class enrolments;
  8. To undertake administrative work associated with classes, including completing class register, enrolment feedback and evaluation forms etc. in accordance with LLL requirements and within stated timescales;
  9. To undertake all existing and new Quality Assurance processes associated with the modules and study schemes e.g. preparing assessment tasks, marking, giving written & verbal feedback and submitting all of the above for moderation within the given timescales;
  10. To be involved in curriculum development;
  11. To attend induction and staff training events for tutors;
  12. To undertake in-house training;
  13. To attend staff meetings and professional development sessions;
  14. To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post;
  15. To be committed to the University's Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post;
  16. To be committed to your own development and that of your staff through the effective use of the University's Effective Contribution Scheme;
  17. Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.
Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess a degree, equivalent level qualification, or significant relevant experience/specialism in the subject area. A teaching qualification or substantial teaching experience for adults is also required. The candidate should have experience of class planning, delivering, and assessing post-16 teaching, or training sessions.

Able to use IT with confidence, including the Internet, e-mail, social media, and presentation packages for teaching, marketing, and administrative purposes. Evidence of excellent organisational and administrative skills is also required.

Good written and oral communication skills, as well as good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with students of different ages and backgrounds, are essential. The ability to work effectively as part of a team and to live within the advertised geographical area of the post are also required.

An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually are desirable. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area and experience of innovative learning and teaching methods are also beneficial.
