Job Title: Laboratory Technician - Food Structure

Main Purpose of the Job:

The Laboratory Technician will provide technical support to academic and research staff in the Quadram Institute's Food Structure and Bioaccessibility Facility. The post holder will maintain working areas following protocols, good laboratory practice, and support the facility's operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of food samples, including metabolic analysis, biophysical analysis, particle size distribution measurements, and texture analysis.
  • Providing general support for in vitro digestion and fermentation experiments.
  • Maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment.
  • Liaising with the Lab Manager regarding equipment maintenance and service.
  • Understanding and conforming to Health and Safety requirements.
  • Writing standard operating procedures and training staff to use equipment.

Person Profile:

Education & Qualifications:

  • BSc/MSc in Biochemistry, Food Science, Chemistry, or related area.

Specialist Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot.
  • Experienced user of MS Office.
  • Knowledge of biochemical and/or structural analyses.

Relevant Experience:

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Previous experience with quality control processes and reporting.
  • Operation and/or maintenance of scientific instruments.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills:

  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

Additional Requirements:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Able to present a positive image of self and the institute, promoting both international reputation and public engagement aims.
  • Willingness to work outside standard working hours when required.
  • Promotes equality and values diversity.
