Head Gardener Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Head Gardener to lead our new garden project at Sheffield's spinal injury centre. The project aims to create a therapeutic and accessible garden space for patients and their families.

The successful candidate will work closely with renowned garden designers Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg to plant and establish the new garden, which will feature a water feature, garden pod, and large glasshouse. The garden will also include an area of raised beds for patients to participate in garden therapy sessions.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for delivering a therapeutic gardening program, as well as arts activities for patients in the garden, supported by the charity's Arts Co-ordinator. The role requires excellent communication skills, experience of leading and managing teams, and a passion for people as well as plants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the garden project and work closely with designers and stakeholders
  • Develop and implement a therapeutic gardening program
  • Manage a team of volunteers and staff
  • Collaborate with the charity's Arts Co-ordinator to deliver arts activities
  • Manage budgets and petty cash

Requirements

  • Practical experience as a gardener, including experience of garden management
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent Diploma in Principles and Practices of Horticulture
  • Experience of leading and managing teams
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Confident public speaker

Desirable Qualifications

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture
  • Experience of therapeutic activities
  • Working in the voluntary sector
