Job Title: Head Gardener

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Head Gardener to lead the development and maintenance of a new hospital garden project at Sheffield's spinal injury centre.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of gardeners and volunteers to create a therapeutic and accessible garden space for patients and their families. The garden will feature a water feature, garden pod, and large glasshouse, as well as raised beds for patients to participate in garden therapy sessions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the garden, including planting, pruning, and pest management
  • Manage a team of gardeners and volunteers to ensure the garden is well-maintained and accessible
  • Develop and implement a therapeutic gardening program for patients, including garden therapy sessions and arts activities
  • Work closely with the charity's Arts Co-ordinator to deliver arts activities for patients in the garden
  • Collaborate with the rehabilitation centre's team to arrange social events for patients and their families
  • Manage budgets and petty cash, and ensure the garden is financially sustainable
Requirements
  • Practical experience as a gardener, including experience of garden management
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent Diploma in Principles and Practices of Horticulture
  • Experience of leading and managing teams
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • Good IT skills, specifically proficient with Microsoft Office 365: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Confident public speaker
  • Experience in managing budgets and petty cash
Desirable Qualifications
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture
  • Experience of therapeutic activities
  • Working in the voluntary sector
  • NHS experience or work in a health care setting
  • Digital photography
  • Supplier management and ordering
