About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Matron to join our team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will provide professional, clinical, and managerial leadership within paediatric services, acting as a role model to provide excellent leadership and operational management in their assigned areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and develop standards to promote high-quality practice.
  • Ensure the provision of safe, effective, and high-quality care for all patients through neonatal and paediatric services from referral/admission to transfer/discharge within the multidisciplinary framework.
  • Monitor service delivery and patient outcomes, identifying new initiatives and investigating any issues arising within the clinical area, formulating, and adjusting plans to ensure that care is delivered in the appropriate care setting.
  • Co-ordinate and assess the operational planning of the service to enable the Trust's and the Divisional objectives to be met.
  • First-line management of Band 7 Nursing staff, including ward managers, team leaders, specialist nurses, and shift coordinators.
  • Collaborate with all staff to maintain a safe, clean working environment, recognising changing priorities and risks, and implementing corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.
  • Lead the development of work stream project plans and documents in accordance with successful programme methodologies.
  • Be operationally responsible for leading the design and implementation of a monitoring framework of activities and outcomes as well as ongoing management of cross-programme interdependencies, work stream resources, and work stream level risks and issues.
  • Hold others to account, in line with agreed milestone plans and delivery targets, identifying risks and initial remedial actions.
Person Specification
  • Registered Nurse/Children's nurse.
  • Evidence of recent relevant professional development.
  • Educated to Masters level or working towards.
  • Experience as an operational manager at Band 7 level or equivalent, minimum of 2 years.
  • Extensive experience of working as a practicing nurse.
  • Experience of working with stakeholders to improve the quality of service.
  • Change management experience.
  • Performance and operational oversight.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in senior management position or senior clinical role.
  • Experience of quality improvement methodology and implementation of projects.
  • Experience of performance management.
  • Experience of supporting learners and students not meeting sign-off stages.
  • Experience of interprofessional working.
Skills and Knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate consistent adherence to trust values and behaviours.

  • Clear understanding of paediatric/neonatal issues and up-to-date knowledge of current NHS developments.
  • Evidence of clinical and professional expertise acquired through CPD and experience.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of national and local safety agendas.
