Mental Health Specialist for Primary Care

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mental Health Specialist to join our team at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As a Mental Health Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting GPs with on-the-day mental health support for patients.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of primary care health provision and experience working in community or primary care mental health services for adults and older age adults with severe / significant mental illness.

Key Responsibilities
  • To provide specialist advice and support within GP surgeries, focusing on triaging mental health concerns raised by patient requests.
  • To review patients presenting with mental health issues, considering a range of support and treatment interventions, and providing highly specialized advice and signposting when appropriate.
  • To offer brief interventions as needed, such as problem-solving, decision-making, building resilience, and risk de-escalation.
  • To work as a member of the primary Care MDT and develop and implement specialist mental health training to the PCN.
  • To provide navigation support to help GPs make appropriate referrals to relevant community and secondary care services.
Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • Current professional registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker, or Occupational Therapist.
  • A strong desire to work within and good understanding of primary care health provision.
  • Community or primary care experience in mental health services for adults and older age adults with severe / significant mental illness.
  • Evidence of relevant post-registration training and development in motivational interviewing, brief solution-focused interventions, cognitive behavioral approaches, and psychosocial intervention.
Desirable Skills
  • Minimum 5 years' post-registration experience in working with people with mental health needs.
  • Experience of effective collaborative working in partnership to deliver holistic health and social care outcomes.
  • Proficient in clinical audits and research.
