Job Overview:

The successful candidate will provide critical support to operational teams within both warehouse and transport functions, ensuring a solid framework for maintaining pioneering Health, Safety, Environment, and Facility standards across the operation.

This role involves working remotely to support the Portbury location, with occasional flexibility required outside of standard hours due to operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Portbury location by participating in accident investigations, collecting month-end data, and entering it into the EcoOnline system.
  • E nsure that pre-planned maintenance schedules for statutory and non-statutory inspections are in place and carried out in a timely manner at the Hemel Hempstead Facilities.
  • Manage site Health and Safety in accordance with Wincanton's Safety Health Environmental Procedures.
  • Ensure the site meets or exceeds Health and Safety targets, including LTIFR, TIFR, and CMK.
  • Maintain up-to-date site training records and matrix to meet Wincanton standards.
  • Coordinate site Health and Safety activities, including committees, training, and communications, to ensure compliance.
  • Own the site's Risk Assessment and SSoWs programme – ensuring compliance and currency.
  • Use corporate IT systems (e.g., EcoOnline, Webrisk) to produce reports and complete mandatory IT training modules in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance in accident investigations, Major Incidents, and RIDDOR reports.
  • Investigate and remediate major incidents & lost time incidents personally.
  • Work in line with Company Process and Audit requirements.
  • Organize people and activities effectively, knowing what to measure and how to measure it.
  • Liaise with the Home Delivery Network H&S Advisor and site management teams.
  • Define problems and devise effective solutions using rigorous logical and analytical tools.
  • Make proactive decisions based on analysis, experience, judgment, and intuition.
  • Conduct site inspections to analyze existing conditions and arrange appropriate actions.
  • Ensure compliance with Regulations through frequent inspections and audits of written documentation.
  • Hold Health & Safety meetings and oversee First Aiders on site, acting in accordance with site compliance and current legislation.
  • Manage and drive safety plans across the site, advocating a H&S first culture.
  • Assist the Business Unit H&S Manager at other locations in agreement with local management.
  • Manage contractors on site (e.g., permit to work compliance against Wincanton standards).
  • Visit Portbury when required to monitor compliance.
  • Attend company safety conferences/courses as required throughout the year.

Requirements:

  • Holds or is working towards a relevant Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH.
  • Experience of HSE in an operational area, preferably in warehousing.
  • A proactive, effective, and motivated team player with strong engagement and communication skills.
  • Remains calm and works well under pressure in tight deadline situations, displaying exceptional organizational skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience working to ISO standards would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrates a keen interest in continually improving Health, Safety, and Environment performance.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to think rationally under pressure.
  • Organized and able to prioritize effectively.

Salary Range: £55,000 - £65,000 per annum
