Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Muslim Chaplain to join our Chaplaincy team at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our team, you will provide spiritual care and support to patients, families, and staff of all faiths and backgrounds.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide pastoral, spiritual, and religious care to patients, relatives, and staff within the Trust, working within the multi-faith team.
  • Offer specialist pastoral, spiritual, and religious advice and care for Muslim patients, families, and staff.
  • Maintain, participate in, and develop pastoral, spiritual, and religious care in the Trust through providing support, training, and facilitation of reflective practice.
  • Assist with the supervision and direction of chaplaincy support for all, including recruitment, training, and support of chaplaincy volunteers.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rota, providing out-of-hours cover for weekends and public holidays, responding to urgent requests for pastoral, spiritual, and religious care.
Requirements
  • Degree-level training in a subject relevant to healthcare chaplaincy, including systematic study in theology, religious studies, pastoral care, psychology, counseling, or psychotherapy.
  • Accreditation or acknowledged status for faith/belief community leadership role.
  • Commitment to undertake further training essential to the requirements of the post.
  • Substantial experience in healthcare chaplaincy or equivalent in a pastoral care setting.
  • Significant work with people from diverse backgrounds, including those of faith and no faith.
  • Counseling/pastoral skills.
  • Able to lead Islamic services and non-religious ceremonies in a way that is sensitive to the pastoral context and needs of those present.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary setting and the ability to promote shared decision-making.
  • Demonstratable evidence of working with and respecting religious, spiritual, and pastoral diversity and differences.
  • Endorsement to practice as a healthcare chaplain by a recognized sponsoring faith, community, or belief group.
  • Working knowledge of major faith communities and belief groups in relation to the acute hospital context.
  • Evidence of experience of the NHS as a healthcare chaplain.
  • An understanding of the NHS and chaplaincy.
  • An understanding of the principles and practice of governance.
  • A proven pastoral, spiritual, and religious expertise in complex, emotional, and distressing situations.
  • Knowledge of religious, spiritual, and ethical issues related to healthcare.
  • Ability to represent the chaplaincy department.
  • The ability to communicate sensitively with people who have mental and physical health problems.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Effective performance as a healthcare chaplain at a minimum of Band 5.
  • Involvement in the recruitment of staff and volunteers.

  • The ability to establish effective relationships and maintain the cooperation of others.
  • To be trustworthy, showing careful attention to the individual and specific needs of those in their care.
  • Demonstrate appropriate personal and professional values and behaviors and practice in accordance with the UKBHC Code of Ethics.
  • A professional chaplaincy identity rooted in one's own religious/spiritual/pastoral heritage that integrates professional values and behaviors, skills, and specialist knowledge.
  • Competent use of self in chaplaincy practice, including emotional availability, cultural humility, and appropriate self-disclosure.
  • Supportive of the Trust's values.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, which offers cover overnight and at weekends.
  • To deputise for the Lead Chaplain on operational issues as required.
