Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Newcastle University Full time

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our interdisciplinary research team at Newcastle University. The successful candidate will be working on a collaborative project to investigate the environmental and process factors affecting nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from trickling filters (TFs) in the UK water industry.

This project will involve working with a team of experts from various universities and research institutions to deliver a scientifically robust study. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting experiments at scale, collecting and analyzing data, and providing evidence for the monitoring and mitigation of N2O emissions.

The UK water industry has set an ambitious goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with its Net Zero 2030 Routemap. However, there is a specific knowledge gap around the potential N2O emissions from TFs, which pose a significant challenge due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate in-situ emissions measurements.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that has the potential to make a significant impact on the UK water industry. They will also have the chance to develop their skills and expertise in environmental science, research, and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments at scale to investigate N2O emissions from TFs
  • Collect and analyze data to provide evidence for the monitoring and mitigation of N2O emissions
  • Work with a team of experts to deliver a scientifically robust study
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce N2O emissions from TFs

Requirements

  • PhD in Environmental Science or a related field
  • Experience in research and experimentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary and benefits package
  • The opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project with a significant impact on the UK water industry
  • Professional development and training opportunities
  • A collaborative and supportive work environment
