We are seeking a motivated candidate to work as a Research Assistant in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University. The successful applicant will be involved in conducting research on the project 'The afterlives of war-related injury'.
The project aims to investigate the immediate and long-term effects of physical and mental injury among civilian populations in Gaza and Iraq. As a Research Assistant, you will conduct desk-based research and remote methods, such as interviews and surveys, to produce a body of data about the effects of injury at different scales. You will also work towards research on the Gaza-based component of the project, tracing the immediate and long-term effects of injury at different scales from the individual and family to the social and economic.
Your responsibilities will include conducting remote interviews and administering online surveys with healthcare workers, the injured, and their families in Gaza. You will also be responsible for translation and transcription of data and other materials between Arabic and English, as well as conducting primary and secondary data analysis. Additionally, you will be required to present and publish research via academic and policy-relevant publications individually and collaboratively with colleagues, and contribute to the collaborative ethos of Geography at Newcastle and the wider research team.
To be successful in this role, you will have a strong understanding of the project aim of investigating health outcomes for vulnerable patient groups, particularly injured persons. You will also have Arabic language skills, prior research experience in Gaza on health-related topics, and first-hand knowledge of Gaza and professional networks based in Gaza. Experience of carrying out prior desk and field-based research and developing research ideas and methodologies is also essential.
The successful candidate will have a MSc or MA in public health or development or a related social science discipline, and a Bachelor degree in a health-related discipline. You will also have highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, and a commitment to carrying out research, engagement, and impact both as a member of a team and independently.
