Job Purpose

The University of Glasgow seeks a highly skilled Research Scientist to join its Centre for Virus Research. The successful candidate will work to develop mathematical and statistical approaches to better understand virus infection, evolution, and transmission.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct research individually or jointly in accordance with project deliverables.
  • Carry out quantitative research into virology.
  • Work and be in regular communication with other researchers at the CVR, University of Glasgow, and at external collaborators.
  • Develop and enhance your research profile and reputation.
  • Contribute to the presentation of work at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team and group meetings.
  • Contribute to the supervision, mentoring, and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.
  • Keep up-to-date with the relevant literature and recent advances in the field.
  • Engage in appropriate continuing professional development activities.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Scottish Credit and Qualification level 10 (Honour's degree) in mathematics, statistics, physics, epidemiology, quantitative biology, or another relevant quantitative discipline.
  • Or equivalent professional qualifications in a relevant academic/research discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent data analysis and research skills.
  • High level of mathematical ability.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of a scientific programming language, such as Python, Julia, or C++.
  • Ability to work effectively with researchers from other disciplines.
  • Effective time management.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to develop novel and creative solutions to scientific problems.

Experience

  • Experience of developing mathematical or statistical approaches to solve problems in biology.
  • Experience of writing software for processing and analysing biological data.
  • Experience in writing scientific reports, projects, or publications.
  • Experience of verbally presenting scientific results to mixed audiences.
  • Experience in Unix/Linux operating systems.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience of computational research involving viruses or infectious disease.
  • Experience of more advanced software development.
  • Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration.
