Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team at King's College Hospital. As a leading teaching trust, we provide a wide range of local hospital services and specialist services across our sites.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Provide high-quality anaesthesia services, including treatment and management duties, to ensure the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Supervise junior medical staff and provide clinical guidance to ensure the delivery of excellent patient care.
  3. Contribute to teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, as well as clinical governance initiatives, to maintain high standards of care.
  4. Participate in departmental research interests and contribute to the development of new treatments and services.
  5. Contribute to audit programs, morbidity and mortality reviews, and clinical governance initiatives to ensure continuous improvement.
  6. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the department's business plan to ensure effective service delivery.
  7. Exercise professional leadership and management skills to ensure the productivity and efficiency of staff within the specialty.
  8. Work collaboratively with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain high standards of care and service delivery.
Requirements
  • FRCA or equivalent qualification
  • Masters degree or equivalent
  • Additional qualifications or diplomas in specialist areas, such as Perioperative Medicine or Regional Anaesthesia
Registration and Training
  • Full registration with the GMC and completion of subspecialty training in anaesthesia
  • Eligibility to apply for a substantive consultant post, with CCT or within six months of completion
Experience and Skills
  • Wide experience in delivering anaesthesia for general, major, and high-risk surgery, as well as trauma and cepod surgery
  • Award of CCT or equivalent
  • Experience in delivering anaesthesia independently and supervising junior colleagues
  • Major trauma management experience
  • Experience in high-risk obstetrics
  • Pre-assessment and perioperative medicine experience
  • Additional training or fellowship in a specialist area
Administration and Leadership
  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy teaching hospital
  • Familiarity with current healthcare structure and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
Audit and Research
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Experience of clinical research and relevant research experience in one or more aspects of anaesthesia
Teaching and Education
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching qualification
