About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Highly Specialist Practitioner Psychologist to join our Department of Haematology at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing specialist care to adults with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. The postholder will work closely with consultant haematologists, specialist nurses, a social worker, junior doctors, and a Band 7 practitioner psychologist to provide inpatient, outpatient, and day unit services.

The centre is part of the South Thames Sickle and Thalassaemia Network and patients are referred for tertiary care from across the region. Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant for adults with sickle cell disease has recently been commissioned at King's, offering the postholder the opportunity to be involved in this exciting development.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Provide specialist psychology services to adults with sickle cell disease or thalassaemia, including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, and monitoring of outcomes.
  2. Provide operational line management and clinical supervision to the Band 7 psychologist.
  3. Work as an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and codes of conduct, taking responsibility for own work, including treatment and discharge decisions with support of clinical supervisor.
Requirements
  • Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration.
  • Additional training in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), or a combination of specialist short courses, or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice–based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice.
  • Completed training course in clinical supervision.
  • Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Evidence of having worked with people with medical conditions as a clinical specialist under supervision.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of complex psychological and physical health needs.
  • Experience of supervising assistant and trainee psychologists having completed the relevant training.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessments and interventions, including for those living with complex medical conditions.
  • Experience in the provision of cognitive behavioural therapy and/or systemic approaches to therapy.
  • Experience of undertaking and interpreting neuropsychological assessments and writing reports based on the results.
  • An understanding of models of health psychology in addition to models of psychopathology.
