Job Overview

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Paediatric Ophthalmology Consultant to join their dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a full range of Paediatric Ophthalmology services, including ROP screening and general Ophthalmology responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Paediatric Ophthalmology, with experience in specialist services and general Ophthalmology responsibilities. They will also have excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with other Consultants in the Unit to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmology service. They will also be responsible for teaching and training junior staff and undergraduates, as well as participating in Clinical Governance.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Specialist Paediatric and Adult Strabismus Services
  • General Ophthalmology responsibilities on call
  • Outpatient clinics at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe/Amersham General Hospital
  • Operating
  • Teaching of Oxford deanery trainees and medical students
  • Other care of inpatients or outpatients
  • Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates
  • Participation in Clinical Governance

Person Specification

  • MB, BS or equivalent GMC registrable qualifications
  • General training in Ophthalmology to CCT / CESR level
  • Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview (CESR must already be held if that is the route by which specialist registration was achieved)
  • Recognised Higher degree/Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology/Adult Strabismus

Experience

  • General training in Ophthalmology with training in Paediatric Ophthalmology/Adult Strabismus to specialist level or equivalent
  • SpR or ST training programme plus ASTO/TSC training
  • Ability to make good decisions at consultant level

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant
  • Evidence for surgical and clinical skills in Ophthalmic surgery to undertake a consultant role
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Communication skills should be highly developed
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
  • Experience of clinical audit

  • GMC Registration
  • Able to travel to and between sites
