An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Deputy Chief Clinical Perfusion Scientist to join our team at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust.

Main Responsibilities

As a key member of our Clinical Perfusion Department, you will be responsible for supporting the Chief Clinical Perfusionist in the provision and management of all perfusion and related services. This will involve taking a lead role in the planning and organisation of service provision, representing Clinical Perfusion at Directorate meetings, and participating in the on-call and late duty rotas.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Choose the most appropriate equipment and disposable items for procedures, reviewing patient notes for relevant medical history, pathology, and diagnosis to make informed clinical decisions.
  • Prepare equipment and disposable items for cardiopulmonary bypass for routine and emergency cardiac surgery.
  • Operate the heart-lung machine and auxiliary equipment to maintain patients' clinical conditions within physiological parameters.
  • Prepare equipment and disposable items for autologous blood salvage procedures for cardiac and other surgical specialties.
  • Prepare and operate equipment necessary for the insertion of intra-aortic balloon catheters and the continuing management of the balloon pump during counter-pulsation support.
  • Undertake and interpret blood gas analysis and thromboelastography testing, including platelet mapping and fibrinogen analysis where necessary.
  • Set up and operate relevant monitoring and safety devices.
  • Prepare and operate equipment and disposables for vacuum-assisted venous drainage and carbon dioxide flushing of the operative field.
  • Lead research and development projects, assisting in their initiation and control.
  • Conduct informal in-service and external formal educational and training sessions with other perfusionists, nursing, and medical staff when required.
  • Complete accurately the relevant departmental and clinical records, providing statistical and administrative information as required.
