Job Title: Principal Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Engineer to join our Civil Structures team in Leeds. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including bridges and ancillary civil structures, and to take on a lead design engineer role.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as Lead Design Engineer to undertake and check the delivery of design solutions and associated outputs.
  • Provide technical guidance, support, and training to colleagues.
  • Assist in mentoring and the development of others.
  • Support the Project Manager to clarify the project brief, agree deliverables, key milestones, project methodology, quality assurance, and control strategy.
  • Establish project checking and approval arrangements and manage internal project start-up meetings.
  • Undertake significant elements of the detailed design and the checking of outputs as directed.
  • Assess, document, and communicate design changes to the Project Manager.
  • Be aware of work requirements and take personal responsibility in delivering this to agreed time, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Review projects on completion and recommend/implement improvements to technical policy, processes, and design solutions as appropriate.
Requirements:
  • A Master's or Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural engineering.
  • 10+ years relevant post-qualification structures design experience and a strong successful record of project delivery in structures design, including bridges and ancillary civil structures.
  • Chartered Membership of the ICE or IStructE.
  • Significant experience with design to Eurocodes and DMRB.
  • Experience mentoring graduate engineers under ICE or IStructE training schemes.
  • Extensive experience of delivering projects within tight timescales.
  • Proficient with structural design and analysis software such as Autodesk Structural Bridge Design, LUSAS, or similar.
  • Significant previous experience of providing project governance on projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt your style to suit different audiences.
  • Extensive civil structures design experience, including working on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Experience of working on projects from initial tender/bid submissions, project management, leading the production of engineering drawings, obtaining statutory or third-party approvals, project administration, etc.
  • The ability to gain insight beyond a client's immediate need to identify opportunities that benefit the client through meaningful and productive relationships.
  • Ability to communicate in a fluent and positive manner with other team members and to produce reports in clear English.
  • A full UK driving licence.
