Job Summary
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Process Safety Specialist Inspector to join our team. As a key member of our Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division (CEMHD), you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe operation of onshore major hazard premises and installations across Great Britain.
About the Role
As a Process Safety Specialist Inspector, you will be responsible for:
- Inspecting a variety of workplaces to ensure that risks are being actively managed and reduced, driving improvements, and gaining commitment to comply with the law.
- Forensic investigation of process safety-related incidents to identify the root cause and direct the technical aspect of the investigation, calling in other specialist support and supporting legal action to prevent a recurrence.
- Writing technical reports to explain your specialist opinion to guide legal decisions.
- Appearing as a specialist witness at tribunals, inquests, and prosecutions.
Key Responsibilities
You will work closely with other technical specialists to ensure the work activities of those we regulate are operating within the legislative framework. Your work will involve:
- Inspecting and investigating workplaces to identify and mitigate risks.
- Providing technical assistance to colleagues undertaking complex investigations into serious incidents.
- Developing and implementing strategies to improve process safety across various industries.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A breadth and depth of practical process safety experience in the design and operation of industrial-scale chemical processing plants and/or onshore downstream oil industry processing.
- Experience of hazard identification and risk assessment techniques, such as HAZOPs, in the safe design and operation of a safe plant.
- Experience of applying the principles of safety as applied to the manufacture, storage, and handling of hazardous chemicals.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical people.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
