Job Description:
The Director of Geographic Education will be responsible for leading the geography department, ensuring that our students receive a world-class education in this subject. The successful candidate will have a strong background in geography education, with experience in teaching across various key stages. Leadership skills are essential, as the director will oversee curriculum development, assessment, and resource management.
Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Leadership:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive geography curriculum, aligning it with national standards.
- Incorporate contemporary issues, such as climate change and sustainability, into lessons.
- Review and adapt teaching materials regularly to ensure they remain effective and engaging.
- Teaching and Learning:
- Lead high-quality geography teaching across key stages, setting a high standard for the department.
- Model effective teaching practices and provide guidance to colleagues.
- Monitor student progress and implement strategies to improve outcomes.
- Team Management:
- Support and mentor geography teachers in their professional development, helping them to grow and succeed.
- Lead departmental meetings and foster collaboration among team members.
- Address performance issues constructively, working with teachers to improve their practice.
- Resource Management:
- Manage the geography department's budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively.
- Ensure that classrooms and resources (e.g., maps, field equipment, GIS software) are up-to-date and support the delivery of high-quality teaching.
- Assessment and Reporting:
- Oversee consistent assessment practices across the department, ensuring that students receive accurate feedback.
- Analyze exam results and identify trends, using this information to inform teaching and learning strategies.
- Fieldwork and Enrichment:
- Plan and lead field trips to enhance experiential learning and promote deeper understanding of geographical concepts.
- Encourage participation in geography competitions or clubs, inspiring students to pursue their interests.
- Whole-School Contribution:
- Collaborate with other departments to integrate geography into interdisciplinary projects, promoting a more holistic understanding of the subject.
- Support whole-school initiatives, such as sustainability campaigns, demonstrating the relevance of geography to real-world issues.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Essential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a strong background in geography education.
- Proven experience in teaching geography across key stages.
- Leadership experience, such as a second in department or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of curriculum development and assessment.
- Desirable:
- Experience in managing fieldwork and using GIS tools.
- A postgraduate qualification in education or geography.
Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience.
