About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Senior Support Worker to join our team at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. As a Senior Support Worker - Compassionate Care Caller, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care and support to individuals who have attended the Emergency Department (ED) following self-harm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver compassionate care follow-up calls to patients who present to ED following self-harm.
  • Use your skills to engage patients during telephone calls, understand their situation, explore coping strategies, and ensure safety plans are in place.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the causes of aggression and utilize skills in the prevention, de-escalation, and management of violence and aggression.
  • Respond to the needs of people sensitively with regard to their age, race, culture, gender, religion, sexuality, and disability.
  • Ensure that all incidents and complaints are reported to the team manager in accordance with trust policy.
  • Respond to the needs of people in an honest, non-judgmental, and open manner, which respects the right of individuals and groups.
  • Initiate and maintain therapeutic relationships rapidly with patients in mental health crisis.
  • Support patients in identifying issues that may have led to the crisis and facilitate resolution under the supervision of a qualified member of staff.
  • Actively seek to develop your own skills and knowledge in relation to crisis resolution.
  • Recognize the scope of your abilities and responsibilities and practice within them, referring matters to and seeking advice from senior trained team members as appropriate.
  • Participate in social, recreational, therapeutic, and diversional activities with patients and carers.
  • Record all contacts with clients in case notes.
  • Have a knowledge of risk management and utilize tools in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Be aware of and work to the principles of the Mental Health Act (1983).
  • Promote user and (where appropriate) carer involvement in all aspects of care.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and safe keeping of clients' records and matters relating to the Trust.
  • Respect the customs, individuality, values, and spiritual beliefs of the clients.
  • Preserve the dignity and self-respect of clients at all times.
  • Ensure effective communication with clients, relatives, carers, visitors, staff, and others.
  • Give and receive clear messages by telephone or personal contact.
  • Attend staff and other meetings as requested.
  • Participate in the induction of new staff to the unit.
  • Enter client and service activity data onto electronic systems as directed to do so.
Person Specification
  • Experience working with people, patients, carers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in an acute and crisis setting.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management tools within crisis services.
  • Knowledge of mental health problems.
  • Demonstrate ability to determine level of risk to self, service users, and others.
