Animal Welfare Specialist

The successful candidate will lead the zoo department, overseeing animal collection and care, education programs, conservation initiatives, and guest-facing activities. This role ensures the safe and efficient delivery of the Zoo operation, upholding high standards of welfare and educational innovations.
As a key management position, you'll be responsible for driving best practices, managing a team of 25 keepers, and ensuring guests have an exceptional zoo experience through feedback-driven improvements.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the zoo department, including animal collection and care, education programs, and guest-facing activities
- Develop and implement strategies to improve guest experience and engagement
- Manage a team of 25 keepers, providing guidance and support to ensure excellent animal care and welfare
- Maintain high standards of animal welfare, husbandry, and educational innovations
To succeed in this role, you'll need:
- A minimum of six years' experience in a zoo or similar attraction
- In-depth knowledge of the Zoo Licensing Act and Secretary of State's Standards of Modern Zoo Practice
- Strong understanding of guest experience planning and delivery, with the ability to engage guests through innovative approaches
- Passion for people leadership, with drive, focus, and enthusiasm for development and staff engagement
- Experience in managing a department budget, forecasting, and readjusting as required
- Knowledge of health and safety legislation relevant to visitor attractions
- A competitive annual salary of £55,000 - £65,000
