Northallerton, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom North Yorkshire Council Full time

About North Yorkshire Council

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to take on the role of School Governors in our North Yorkshire schools.

As a School Governor, you will play a vital part in shaping the future of our children and young people. You will work closely with the Head Teacher to ensure the school is managed effectively and provide an independent perspective on its development.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Direction: Help plan the school's strategic direction and make informed decisions to improve outcomes for students.
  • Accountability: Hold the Head Teacher and other school leaders accountable for their actions and decisions.
  • Financial Oversight: Oversee the school's finances and ensure they are used efficiently and effectively.

Governing boards typically meet every term, but the frequency and structure of meetings may vary depending on the board. You can expect to visit your assigned school regularly to get to know the community and staff.

Support and guidance will be provided to new governors to help them understand their duties and develop their skills in key areas of school management.

You don't need any specific skills or experience to become a governor – we're looking for people from diverse backgrounds with different perspectives and expertise.

However, as this role involves working with children and young people, you will need to undergo a DBS check. Additionally, please note that governing boards are required by law to publish the names of governors.

In line with government guidance, schools may conduct online searches as part of the selection process.

If your application progresses, you will be asked to provide more information about the skills you can offer and the locations within North Yorkshire you would find manageable in terms of travel time.

Salary Estimate: £15,000 - £20,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
