About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Optometrist to join our team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Clinical Lead, you will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive range of specialist optometric services to the highest standards of quality and patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Head of Department to develop and implement a range of specialist optometric services.
  • Provide optometric assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients of all ages, including those with complex visual disabilities.
  • Deliver complex specialist optometric services, including contact lens services, low vision services, and ultrasound biometry.
  • Coordinate and evaluate service delivery, ensuring the appropriate deployment of staff and resources.
  • Act as a source of clinical expertise for junior staff, providing guidance and support in the assessment and practice of clinical skills.
  • Undertake specific administrative duties, including tasks associated with lead roles for specialist services and other administrative tasks as agreed with the Head of Optometry Department.
  • Participate in clinical audit and research, coordinating and advising within the service as required.
  • Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for various disciplines within ophthalmology.
  • Take a major role in the preparation, organisation, and delivery of teaching programmes provided by the Optometry Department.
Person Specification
  • Registered as an Optometrist with the General Optical Council.
  • Specialist knowledge across a range of optometric procedures and practices, supported by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.
  • Ability to act as an independent practitioner, guided by broad occupational policies and regulations.
  • Physical ability to move major clinical equipment and perform frequent concentration in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with patients, carers, and colleagues in highly distressing or emotional circumstances.
  • Ability to work in an indoor confined environment, largely in semi-darkness, for prolonged periods.
