Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at the Derbyshire Pathology Service. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our Biomedical Scientists by performing a wide range of tasks associated with the processing of samples.

Responsibilities will include sorting, preparing, processing, and handling blood, urine, tissue, and bodily fluids. You will also be required to undertake quality assurance procedures, housekeeping duties, maintenance of equipment, and disposal of clinical waste. The ability to multitask and work flexibly is essential in this role.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will be working as part of the Derbyshire Pathology Service within the Microbiology laboratory based at Royal Derby Hospital. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills and experience in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Main Duties

  • Undertake routine analytical tasks and be responsible for instrument maintenance and housekeeping in line with departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Undertake basic clerical duties, including data inputting and phone enquiries, to support sample testing and reporting on the laboratory computer system.
  • Organize the regular transport of samples, goods, and post to other sites and laboratories.
  • Stock control and maintenance of reagents and consumables in the working environment.
  • Adhere to information governance policies, including maintaining standards of confidentiality, security, and safety in line with national and local guidelines.
  • Train new starters and act as a role model, ensuring that all team members and others visiting the area give a high priority to policies and procedures relating to infection control.
