Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Support Coordinator to join our Immunotherapy Service in University Hospitals Sussex. As a key member of our acute oncology nursing team, you will play a vital role in supporting patients with cancer who are experiencing side effects of their treatments or presenting to hospital in an unplanned way.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful post holder will work collaboratively with the Band 5 co-ordinator for Immunotherapy (IO) and acute oncology (AO) to provide support for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer and are acutely unwell, receiving Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) or have a cancer of unknown primary. The coordinator will often be a point of contact for signposting and referring on as required. Some of the role will be to provide administrative support and keeping data to support the teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with the Band 5 co-ordinator in IO and AO to provide support for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer and are acutely unwell.
  • Assess communication needs of patients and their families to ensure they can understand the information being given.
  • Ensure people who contact the service are aware that they can access and signpost to a range of Macmillan services.
  • Maintain appropriate and detailed documentation of patient contacts and interventions.
  • Signpost and co-ordinate translation / alternative modes of communication as required.
  • Professional communication with other staff encouraging the organisation's values of teamwork, consistency and transparency.
  • Providing some administrative support and capturing supporting data for annual report and audit proformas on number of referrals to the immunotherapy service and acute oncology team.
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent including English and maths.
  • Educated to at least NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of competency.
  • Relevant experience in health or social care setting / demonstrable transferable skills.
  • Experience of working within a diverse team.
  • Familiar with and confident using databases such as Outlook, Excel, and other packages.
  • Confident to be able to support people with life-changing news.
