About this role

We are seeking an exceptional Cost Consultant to join our team at Mace, a leading global consultancy. As a key member of our consult business, you will harness our unique combination of leading-edge practical expertise and project delivery consultancy to unlock the potential of every project.



Key responsibilities


  1. Support cost planning, including ownership of and presenting cost plans to clients and internal stakeholders.




  2. Support the procurement process, ensuring stages including prequalification, enquiry, analysis, selection, and contract preparation are performed effectively.




  3. Support the delivery of cost management services to deliver key strategic outcomes and KPIs, directly influencing strategic development of plans.




  4. Conduct feasibility studies, advising on procurement strategies and contract selection, writing and undertaking procurement reports.




  5. Apply value management techniques at the outset of a project.




  6. Manage estimating and cost planning activities, taking ownership of and presenting the final cost plan.




  7. Assist in procurement and selection of main contractors.




  8. Prepare contract documents, warranties, bonds, and licenses and assist formal execution by the appropriate parties.




  9. Advise on administration of the terms of the building contract.




  10. Measure and provide valuations of the work carried out, adjusting variations in accordance with the terms of the contract and agreeing with the contractor.




  11. Provide cost control and reporting services during the contract.




  12. Prepare financial reports for the client in the form and at the frequency required.




  13. Identify all costs associated with design changes, contract awards, construction activities, and client charges.




  14. Participate in the evaluation of claims for delay and additional costs made by the contractor and any nominated subcontractors/suppliers.




  15. Advise on the issue of certificates of practical completion and ensure that final accounts are negotiated and agreed.




  16. Advise on the issue of certificates of making good defects and final completion in accordance with any requirements relating to completion, submissions, and approvals.




  17. Deliver improvements in systems and processes, driving transformational change.




  18. Provide guidance and direction to assistant cost consultants and other junior team members.




  19. Provide informal mentoring/training to junior members of the team.




  20. Seek opportunities for continuous improvements/improving working processes.




  21. Develop effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.




  22. Manage stakeholders.




  23. Work collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition and share responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.





About you

You will have:




  1. Proven experience in cost consultancy.




  2. Cost planning, budgeting, and estimating experience.




  3. A sound understanding of costs and timescales of work undertaken and implications of risk of failure to deliver.




  4. Understanding different types of contracts, including the method of measurement.




  5. Negotiation skills.




  6. Analytical skills.




  7. Digital competence.




  8. A degree in quantity surveying/cost management (or equivalent).




  9. Professional membership or working towards i.e. MRICS/RICS (or equivalent).




  10. Proficient knowledge and expertise in specific sector/market of project/role.




  11. Relevant technical qualification/certification for project portfolio/s.




  12. Experience in most forms of contract.




  13. Sound knowledge and ability to undertake and advise on contract administration and contract management.




  14. Ability to be an effective communicator with all stakeholders.




  15. Ability to seek opportunities for implementing improved working practices.




  16. Manage relevant stakeholders for project/s.




  17. Develop effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.




  18. Good interpersonal skills to prepare reports, negotiate, and build relationships with key stakeholders.




  19. Problem-solving and analytical skills for resolving cost and contract administration and procurement issues within consult.




  20. Managing and developing graduate trainees and/or assistant cost consultants.




  21. Identifying and participating in new initiatives that add value, which led to service improvement e.g. BIM.




  22. Champions and operates within an inclusivity environment.




  23. Understand personal strengths and weaknesses, seeking learning and support where appropriate.




  24. Understanding of present-day issues such as sustainability, social value, and carbon reduction.




  25. Strong understanding of industry best practice.




  26. You will also have:




  27. Degree in quantity surveying/cost management (or equivalent).




  28. Professional membership or working towards i.e. MRICS/RICS (or equivalent), or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.




  29. Commercial and financial acumen.




  30. Knowledge of value engineering, life cycle costing, contract law, and contractual frameworks relating to construction.




  31. Experience of managing parts of projects within large, diverse teams.




  32. Experience of developing relationships with key senior stakeholders.




  33. Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.




  34. Knowledge of BIM techniques and applications.




  35. Proven experience in areas such as risk management and change control management.




  36. Detailed knowledge of various forms of contract.




  37. Capex V Opex cost analysis/advice.




  38. Knowledge of value engineering, life cycle costing, contract law, and contractual frameworks relating to construction.




  39. Identifying and generating business development opportunities with existing clients.
