About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Acute Medicine to join our team at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our Acute Medicine consultant team, you will be responsible for providing senior cover for the Emergency Admission Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Unit.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services.
  • Observe and follow the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, as well as approved standing orders, financial instructions, and standards of conduct.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff, and devote time to this activity on a regular basis.
  • Teach medical students and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Ensure adequate arrangements are in place for hospital staff involved in patient care and able to be contacted when on call.
Person Specification
  • Full GMC Registration, with licence to practise, or eligible for full GMC registration.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Acute Internal Medicine, or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training at time of interview.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for relevant courses (ALS, ATLS).
  • Experience in Acute Medicine clinical management, including SDEC.
  • Involvement in clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of junior colleagues and medical students.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Meets the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice.
  • Evidence of a caring, holistic approach to patient care.
  • Able to demonstrate organisational skills, including time management and delegation.
  • Evidence of participation in multidisciplinary teamwork, showing leadership and tolerance to colleagues.
  • Able to demonstrate clinical leadership in Critical Care and Acute Medicine.
  • Evidence of commitment to personal and departmental professional development.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and other health professionals.
  • Able to use clinical IT systems.
