This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work as an Institutional Physician in the correctional setting. As a key member of the internal health services multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for providing professional medical care and medication management to inmates with assistance from nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities- Provide medical care and medication management to inmates
- Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses
- Diagnose or treat acute health care problems, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries
- Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized
- Assist with preparation and modification of treatment plans and recommend appropriate programs
- Provide evidence-based health education to the inmate population
- Graduation from an accredited medical college
- Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty
- Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia
- Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty
- Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities
- Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness and current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria
- Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
- Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
- Experience providing medical care in a correctional setting
This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.
