About the Role

The Early Years Special Educational Needs (SEND) Support Officer will provide practical guidance to practitioners supporting children with complex needs across Kingston and Richmond.

This role involves working with private, voluntary, and independent settings to support children with SEND, focusing on those with multiple needs or requiring enhanced support. The post holder will also work with children aged 0-2 years who are not receiving Portage Services and collaborate with schools at key transition points.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement professionals' recommendations, teaching practitioners how to break them down into small steps or SMART targets.
  • Demonstrate practical interaction and intervention strategies, monitoring their effectiveness in helping children learn and develop.
  • Develop small group activities, showcasing how to use resources effectively and support SENCOs at networks and training sessions.
  • Support settings with statutory assessment paperwork, attend multi-agency meetings, and participate in panels or support SEND planning meetings as directed by the Senior Adviser Early Years SEND.
  • Contribute significantly to EHC Needs Assessment panels and attend panels/scrutiny for EY and KS1.
  • Complete specialist assessment paperwork for specialist panels and contribute to the development of SEN training and networks.
About You

You will have the ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with various professionals across schools, PVIs, health, social care, and education, as well as in partnership with parents/carers.

This includes:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including open, honest, persuasive, and pragmatic negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Strong organisational abilities, including time management, creative-thinking, problem-solving, and multitasking, working independently with minimal management supervision.
  • Personal determination, drive, energy, and ambition to achieve challenging objectives, celebrate success, and deliver excellent outcomes for children using a strength-based approach.
  • A willingness to self-evaluate and develop your own professional practice through engaging with reflective practice and evidencing the impact of your work.
  • Substantial experience working in an early years or similar setting.
  • Direct experience supporting children with a range of additional needs and disabilities.
  • Sound knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice 2015 and the Local Offer.
  • Substantial experience planning for children with complex needs and adapting practice to meet identified needs, modeling intervention strategies to others.
  • Broad knowledge of interaction and intervention strategies to support learning and progress.

We offer a positive and supportive environment, providing access to a wide range of resources, a competitive salary, and hybrid working options. As an employee of Achieving for Children, you will also have access to:
