We are seeking an experienced and skilled Microbiology Laboratory Manager to lead our Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Easter Bush Campus.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the effective and safe operation of the laboratory, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of diagnostic results to clinicians and researchers. This includes managing a small team, overseeing training and performance, and driving the development of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a small team of laboratory staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the effective and safe operation of the laboratory.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of new diagnostic tests and workflows, enhancing the laboratory's capabilities and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and researchers to ensure the laboratory's diagnostic services meet their needs, and provide expert advice on microbiological matters.
  • Manage the laboratory's budget, resources, and personnel, ensuring effective use of resources and achieving departmental goals.
  • Develop and implement quality control and quality assurance procedures to ensure the laboratory's diagnostic results are accurate and reliable.

Requirements:

  • Honours and/or PhD degree in microbiology or a related biomedical science, or extensive experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
  • Practical experience of microbiology diagnostic techniques, including bacteriological and fungal biology.
  • Relevant experience working in a microbiology laboratory with a significant routine diagnostic workload, including management responsibilities and leadership.
  • Experience of people management, including training, organisation, motivation, and performance management.
