We are seeking an experienced and skilled Microbiology Laboratory Manager to lead our Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Easter Bush Campus.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the effective and safe operation of the laboratory, ensuring the timely and professional reporting of accurate identification and antimicrobial sensitivity testing results to clinicians and other clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading a small team of laboratory staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of laboratory activities.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to enhance the laboratory's diagnostic services, teaching, research, and science communication/public engagement.
  • Collaborating with clinicians, researchers, and other stakeholders to ensure the laboratory's services meet the needs of the University and the wider veterinary community.
  • Managing the laboratory's budget, resources, and personnel to ensure efficient and effective operation.
  • Staying up-to-date with the latest developments in microbiology and diagnostic techniques, applying this knowledge to improve laboratory services and outcomes.

Requirements:

  • Honours and/or PhD degree in microbiology or a related biomedical science, or extensive in-post, specialist technical experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
  • Practical experience of microbiology diagnostic techniques, accompanied by a comprehensive understanding of fundamental bacteriological and fungal biology.
  • Relevant experience working in a microbiology laboratory with a significant routine diagnostic or similar workload, including management responsibilities and leadership.
  • Experience of people management, including overseeing training, organisation, motivation, and managing performance.
  • The ambition and drive to develop the laboratory, enhancing income, streamlining workflows, introducing new tests, and leading research outputs.
