About the Role:

The Youth Justice Service (YJS) is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to support the team in providing community and through-care services to children and young people involved in the criminal justice process.

As a Sessional Youth Justice Support Worker, you will be part of an inter-disciplinary team that provides flexible support to permanent staff members. This role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about working with children and young people outside of full-time employment, and may suit retired, semi-retired individuals, or students.

You will have the opportunity to engage, motivate, and support children and young people through various activities, including reparation, sports mentoring, and restorative justice interventions. Your ability to build and maintain positive relationships with service users will be essential in this role.

The successful candidate will have previous knowledge of youth crime issues and/or national standards in the Youth Justice Service, with evidence of higher education in a criminal justice discipline, Social Work, or Youth Work setting being desirable. Additionally, access to transport for work purposes is essential, as is the ability to liaison and work co-operatively with other agencies/professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engage, motivate and support children and young people through various activities.
• Reparation: Assist in delivering reparation activities that focus on the child or young person providing a visible contribution to the local community.
• Sports mentoring/activities: Assist and support children and young people to engage in diversionary activities, outward bound activities, or residential trips.
• Restorative Justice interventions: Support children and young people in restorative justice interventions.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with children and young people throughout the period of working with them.
• Ensure equipment is safe and fit for purpose, and report defects to YJS management immediately.
• Attend and actively contribute to core induction, training, and related events.

Terms and Conditions:

This role is subject to safer recruitment practices as it involves work with children and/or vulnerable adults. A satisfactory DBS check is required, and you must be able to speak fluent English. The Council operates an anonymous shortlisting process and considers internal candidates first. For more information, please refer to our recruitment and selection policy.
