Job Overview

The role of a Biomedical Scientist in Point of Care Testing involves providing a comprehensive service, performing routine and specialist procedures, and investigations to aid in patient diagnosis and management.

Key responsibilities include analysing biological specimens, reporting results, and certifying analytical processes. The successful candidate will also participate in developing a comprehensive POCT training programme and work with clinical areas to implement new services.

Main Duties

Key duties include ensuring critical devices are maintained, carrying out troubleshooting, and communicating with various stakeholders including doctors, nurses, and engineers.

The successful candidate will be expected to have excellent communication and time management skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide timely and accurate test results.
  • Routine and specialist Blood Sciences analyses, validation, interpretation, and reporting of results.
  • Maintain complex analytical equipment.
  • Involved in supervision, teaching, advising, and informing all grades of staff.
  • Comply with Standards of Proficiency for State Registration.
Knowledge and Personal Development
  • Build upon acquired technical and analytical knowledge through specialist training and experience.
  • Maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge by participating in CPD.
  • Maintain state registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) by complying with Standards of Proficiency and Conduct.
Communication and Relationships
  • Assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received and liaise with medical staff as necessary.
  • Deal sympathetically with colleagues, other healthcare professionals, and staff from external organisations.
  • Use empathy and understanding to ensure technical, clinical, and linguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.
Scientific and Technical
  • Use specialist knowledge across a range of procedures, authorise test results, and integrate and initiate further tests as appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for finishing, checking, validating, and authorising colleague's work as necessary.
  • Check validity and reliability of analytical processes and maintain satisfactory performance by internal quality control and external quality assessment.
