Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the HM Prison & Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade, playing a vital role in maintaining the smooth operation of our prisons. As a member of our prison support team, you will be responsible for ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles, as well as carrying out searches and patrols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles
  • Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors, and vehicles
  • Walk around the prison site to escort vehicles and contractors
  • Issue and collect staff keys and radios
  • Walk around the prison site patrolling and searching perimeter fence areas
  • Operate the prison radio system
  • Monitor CCTV and report any suspicious activities
  • Welcome visitors on their arrival and escort them if needed
  • Monitor and log mail coming into the prison and report any contraband items
  • Ensure cell doors are locked and all prisoners are safely accounted for
  • Photograph prisoners and process their property and parcels
  • Supervise prisoners and exchange clothing and property
  • Help prison officers escort prisoners around the prison
  • Deliver and collect food trollies or use an electric tug vehicle
  • Transport prisoners and their escorts to their destination
  • Collect mail from the local sorting office and lift heavy sacks
  • Monitor the prison's Personal Identification Number (PIN) phone system
  • Complete relevant records
Requirements
  • No qualifications are required for this role
  • Good judgement, common sense, responsibility, and teamwork are essential
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including nights, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing situations

Working Arrangements

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites, and/or from home. Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
