Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Operational Support Grade at HM Prison & Probation Service. As a key member of our prison support team, you will play a vital role in maintaining the smooth operation of our correctional facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles
  • Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors, and vehicles
  • Escort vehicles and contractors around the prison site
  • Issue and collect staff keys and radios
  • Patrol and search perimeter fence areas
  • Operate the prison radio system
  • Monitor CCTV and report suspicious activities
  • Welcome visitors and escort them as needed
  • Monitor and log mail coming into the prison
  • Report contraband items and preserve evidence
  • Ensure cell doors are locked and all prisoners are safely accounted for
  • Photograph prisoners
  • Process prisoners' property and parcels
  • Supervise prisoners
  • Exchange clothing and property
  • Help prison officers escort prisoners around the prison
  • Deliver and collect food trollies or use an electric tug vehicle
  • Transport prisoners and their escorts to their destination
  • Collect mail from the local sorting office
  • Monitor the prison's Personal Identification Number (PIN) phone system
  • Maintain the log of PIN phone requests from prisoners
  • Complete relevant records
Requirements
  • No qualifications are required for this role
  • Good judgment, common sense, responsibility, and teamwork are essential
  • Able to work varied shifts, including nights, evenings, and weekends
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information

Working Arrangements

Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week, excluding breaks. HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible, and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs.

Eligibility

All candidates are subject to security and identity checks prior to taking up post. All external candidates are subject to 6 months' probation. Internal candidates are subject to probation if they have not already served a probationary period within HMPPS.
