We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Scientist to join our team at the National Nuclear Laboratory. This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with a background in solid-state characterisation, physical chemistry, or electron microscopy to contribute to our cutting-edge research programme.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research on helium behaviour in plutonium oxide, as part of a collaborative project between Sellafield Ltd, AWE, and NNL. The role will involve working closely with industry experts and researchers to develop a detailed understanding of industry projects on plutonium management across partner organisations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Undertake research on helium behaviour in plutonium oxide, with a focus on producing a final report/publication summarising the results of the work and knowledge gaps.
  • Support the setup and execution of measurements on alpha active material and/or using radiation sources within NNL facilities and at other organisations.
  • Pursue the goals of the programme with regards to science output and development of capability/transfer of knowledge.
  • Develop a broader understanding of the relevance and applications of the research within partner organisations.
  • Demonstrate high standards with regards to safety, quality, and security.
Essential Criteria
  • PhD (or equivalent industrial research experience) in a relevant field such as chemist or material scientist, ideally with a background in electron microscopy or solid-state characterisation.
  • Excellent data-taking/analysis skills, aptitude for experimental work.
  • A demonstrated enthusiasm for upholding high technical quality standards.
  • Willingness to travel between partner organisations.
  • Ability to obtain DV level security clearance.

What We Offer

The estimated salary for this role is £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience. We also offer a range of benefits, including access to training and development opportunities, a comprehensive pension scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance.
