Job Title: Senior Pharmacy Assistant Ward Based

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Pharmacy Assistant to join our team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. As a Senior Pharmacy Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the Pharmacy Department in providing high-quality patient care.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the safe and secure handling of patients' own medication on allocated wards. You will work closely with ward Pharmacy staff to ensure the timely supply of missed doses and identify patients who require early review. Your expertise will also be utilized in the interpretation and dispensing of prescriptions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in daily operations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the safe and secure handling of patients' own medication on allocated wards.
  • Assist ward Pharmacy staff with the supply of missed doses, within agreed time frames.
  • Identify patients who require early review and refer them to the appropriate pharmacist or pharmacy technician.
  • Establish whether patients have brought their medicines into hospital and refer patients who require medicines to the pharmacy team to minimize delays or omissions.
  • Liaise with ward nursing staff regarding time-critical medications from a pre-defined list.
  • Ensure patients' own medicines are transferred with the patient to the appropriate ward areas or discharge lounge to prevent missed doses.
  • Undertake a top-up service to allocated wards, ensuring expiry dates and storage conditions of medicines are checked and out-of-date items are removed.
  • Assist Pharmacy Technicians in reviewing stock lists and implementing agreed changes to ensure stock lists are up-to-date.
  • Dispense prescriptions on a patient-specific basis for in-patients and discharge under the supervision of a team pharmacist/accuracy checking technician.
  • Ensure all work is carried out to a high degree of accuracy, safely, and efficiently, following current standard operating procedures.
Requirements
  • NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Technical Services.
  • Recent proven experience of working in a Pharmacy Department as a Pharmacy Assistant.
  • Knowledge of automated medication storage cabinets and electronic prescription tracking systems.
  • Standard keyboard skills, including Microsoft Office and Word.
