Job Summary

The Pontprennau Medical Centre is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Healthcare Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in supporting our General Practitioners (GPs) to deliver high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake new patient health checks, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse rate.
  • Provide support to GPs by taking patient history and baseline observations prior to the patient seeing the GP.
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, recording all findings accurately.
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, advising patients accordingly.
  • Carry out BMI checks as directed.
  • Act as a chaperone as required.
  • When trained, undertake venepuncture and conduct ECGs as requested.
  • Signpost received correspondence to other healthcare professionals, such as clinical pharmacists and practice nurses.
  • Extract all required information from clinical letters, apply medical codes as needed, and add these to patient notes.
  • Support practice patients by arranging appointments, onward referrals, clinical tests, and follow-up appointments.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.
  • Support GPs in liaising with external agencies, such as arranging patient admission while the GP continues with the consultation.
  • Support the GP with wound care and immunisations, including flu vaccinations.
  • Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes.
  • Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months.
Person Specification
  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Vaccination certification.
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment.
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Wound care/removal of sutures and staples.
  • ECGs.
  • Venepuncture.
  • New patient medicals, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse.
  • Chaperone procedure.
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, strong IT skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. They will also have a clear, polite telephone manner and be able to manage their time effectively.
