Are you a motivated and detail-oriented individual looking to launch your career in manufacturing engineering? We have an excellent opportunity for an Apprentice Manufacturing Engineer to join our team at Austin Fraser, based in Farnborough, on a permanent basis.

About the Role

We are seeking a talented and ambitious individual who will support the day-to-day manufacturing operations, ensuring all processes function efficiently and produce repeatable results. As an apprentice in Manufacturing Engineering, you will be responsible for defining manufacturing processes and controls using lean manufacturing techniques.

  1. Providing technical assistance to other departments in resolving problems with existing products.
  2. Continuously working to improve product manufacture to eliminate rework and scrap.
  3. Preparing and updating new or existing manufacturing documentation and tooling required for product manufacture.
  4. SUPPORTING THE IDENTIFICATION OF KEY CHARACTERISTICS OR CRITICAL TO QUALITY FUNCTIONS.
  5. Performing basic design calculations and simple mechanical or thermal analyses.
  6. Aware of and complying with current technology export control legislation and regulatory requirements.
  7. Collaborating with the Innovation team to keep up-to-date with current technologies.
  8. Participating in internal reviews, bids, proposals, and continuous improvement activities.
  9. Applying knowledge and skills to introduce new technologies to improve quality and productivity.
  10. Working with Product Engineers and other team members to contribute to project plans and perform assigned tasks.
  11. Contributing to the preparation of technical proposals to customers for further work.
  12. Liaising with Engineering and other Departments to produce cost estimates for new product designs.
  13. Generating and maintaining Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA).
  14. Creating and delivering presentations to employees, customers, and suppliers with support from more senior engineers.
About You
  • An interest in engineering and a logical problem solver with critical thinking skills.
  • Ideal experience working as part of a team, supporting production and operations.
  • The ability to work in a high-volume manufacturing environment and implement solutions to improve machine reliability and quality issues.
  • Ownership and accountability, teamwork and flexibility with an open attitude.
  • Capable of effective prioritization of tasks and personal time management.
  • Able to work unsupervised and prioritize own time and activities.
  • Show enthusiasm and accomplishments in both academic and non-academic pursuits.
  • Possess proficient verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Effective communication abilities and excel in team environments.
  • Passionate about engineering and experience in using any CAD system for 3D modeling or 2D drawing.
