Head of Finance Job Description

Sewell Wallis Ltd is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Finance to join their team. As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will be responsible for leading the finance department and providing enhanced commercial insight and challenge across the group.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and mentor a small finance team to drive business strategy through high-quality, accurate, and timely financial analysis.
  • Oversee month-end processes, prepare management accounts, and create board packs to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Present financial data to the senior management team through regular meetings and reports.
  • Manage the P&L, conduct detailed variance analysis, and maintain the balance sheet to ensure financial oversight and control.
  • Lead year-end accounting, manage the audit process, and ensure timely delivery of audit and statutory financial statements.
  • Manage quarterly VAT returns and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Conduct regular reviews and support team members with their reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage communications with banks, oversee financial covenants for loans, and handle financing needs to ensure smooth financial operations.
  • Play an active role in ERP system implementation and subsequent reporting improvements to enhance financial efficiency.
  • Provide financial modelling and support to the leadership team on business strategy, capital investments, and expansion plans.
  • Cover accounts payable during holidays or sickness as needed to ensure continuity.
  • Ensure financial controls are in place to provide appropriate governance within the business.
  • Manage relationships with banks, auditors, and external bodies like HMRC to ensure compliance and smooth operations.
  • Participate in all mandatory training and support the ongoing development of the finance team to ensure skills and knowledge are up-to-date.

Requirements:

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA or CIMA equivalent).
  • Significant experience as a senior-level Financial Controller or Head of Finance in a fast-paced growth company.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of accounting regulations and external legislation, with the ability to communicate the impact on the business.
  • Demonstrated ability to add value to the bottom line and improve operational processes.
  • Driven, hungry, and a strong fit with the company culture.
