The Story Studio is the core of our creation process, generating concepts within a team comprising Producers, Designers, Writers, Illustrators, Art Directors, and Coordinators. We commission top Artists and Writers worldwide to bring our stories to life.

Salary: £37,000 pa

This role involves leading the design aspects of our picture books from narrative conceptualisation to storyboarding, composition, layout, typography, and character design for personalisation. This is a hybrid position with three days spent in our Bloomsbury studios.

The work is diverse and fast-paced – we're a small team working closely with writers and artists while maintaining momentum. Each week typically includes:

  • Presenting Design Updates during a weekly Creative Review
  • Discussing storyboards with one or more Artists
  • Receiving feedback on your work from Producers and Art Directors
  • Writing Character Design Briefs for new Artists
  • Creatings cover propositions for books in development
  • Laying manuscripts to page
  • Briefing Designers on test approaches for name presentation
  • Briefing Artworkers on personalisation requirements for multi-character books
  • Briefing Engineers on typesetting names of varying lengths using image-based lettering
  • Briefing Lettering Artists on custom typefaces
  • Sharing favourite picture books with the Art Department
  • Leading an in-house Design Workshop
  • Participating in Creative Sprints for Concept Development
  • Discussing future commissions with Agents

Requirements

We seek someone with:

  • Mid to Senior level experience as a Picture Book Designer (3-5 years)
  • A track record of leading Design projects and mentoring Junior Designers
  • In-depth understanding of Visual Storytelling principles
  • A portfolio showcasing innovative design and typography across various illustrated book formats
  • Excellent contextual communication skills with an adaptable approach
  • Ability to deliver and receive feedback
  • Confidence working with multiple collaborators across projects
  • Ambition with design work and leadership capabilities
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with new technologies in book design
