Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and reliable Refuse and Recycling Loader to join our team. As a key member of our operational team, you will be responsible for collecting refuse and recycling from properties on designated rounds or in areas to meet the needs of residents and businesses in Carmarthenshire.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collect recycling or refuse from the kerbside or other agreed collection point and load into vehicle in accordance with operational plans, procedures, and codes of practice.
  2. Operate any fitted power mechanism, including automated loading/compaction equipment, in accordance with service procedures and vehicle requirements.
  3. Support the driver in operational activities on the round and at tipping locations to reduce and control the potential risks to Health & Safety.
  4. Undertake a visual inspection of sacks and containers to ensure that prohibited/contaminated waste is not collected and that recyclable waste is deposited in the appropriate vehicle compartment.
  5. Ensure that any debris or spilt refuse from damaged sacks is cleared up immediately, and where heavy littering has occurred, report to the Refuse/Recycling Driver.
  6. Continually liaise with the Refuse/Recycling Driver in relation to the round's daily operational activities to report any problems and use of initiative to deal with operational issues as they arise.
  7. Assist the driver to comply with disposal site rules for unloading and weighing when tipping off at specified locations.
  8. Use own initiative to solve any operational problems, including unique collection requirements, contamination, or issues relevant to the performance and safety of the round.
  9. Assist in direct engagement with the public to promote recycling messages and improve participation in the recycling schemes by providing guidance, support, and advice in a knowledgeable and polite manner.
  10. Support other crews in the delivery and completion of the waste and recycling collection rounds.
  11. Undertake all other duties commensurate with the duties of this post as directed by the environmental supervisor.
Requirements
  1. Undertake all aspects of the work in accordance with the Divisional/Services policies and procedures defined, including Risk Management principles, Safe Systems of Work, and the Code of Practice for Refuse & Recycling.
  2. Keep up to date with relevant skills and knowledge by complying with any relevant training requirements to ensure that a safe, efficient, and effective service is provided at all times.
  3. Engage with Managers, Supervisors, colleagues, and crew members to develop working relationships in order to cultivate and implement continual improvement measures and ensure the Council's behavioural standards are adopted.
  4. Uphold the authority's core values and maintain the principles of customer care in responding to any queries from the public in a polite manner.
  5. Wear the allocated personal protective clothing and equipment at all required times to maintain personal safety and that of the crew.
